November 1934 Vestry Meeting

Minutes of the Vestry Meeting held at the Vicarage on Tuesday, Nov 27, at 8 p.m. (Pages 243-244)


Present

The Vicar presiding; Churchwardens Maunsell and Ninnes; Vestrymen Russell, Penistone, Clarke, Hale, Hyde, Coleman, Dr Hosking and Denbee.

Minutes

The Minutes of the Vestry Meeting held on Tuesday, Oct. 30 were read and confirmed.


Financial Statement

The Vicar moved that the Financial Statement be received and accounts amounting to £62.13.6 passed for payment. Seconded by Mr Russell and carried.


Organist

The Vicar reported that in response to an advertisement calling for applications for the position of organist, he had received one application only, from Mr Millar Hope. After a general discussion and having heard Mr Mann, our present choir master, Mr Denbee moved That Mr Millar Hope be appointed to the position of organist at St Matthew's, Masterton. Seconded by Mr Penistone and carried.


Town Clerk

Notice was given on the Vestry by the Borough Engineer to carry out certain repairs to the Town Creek, viz, lift and lay 30" pipe line from Pithus Buildings to Gray Bros. ? and provide man holes and sumps to new grade and line, etc, etc.

Dr Hosking moved and Mr Clark seconded That the Borough Engineer's request be given effect to. That the Borough Council be asked to carry out the work, the cost of same to be charged to the Vestry, who in turn will forward the account to the Diocesan Trustees, with a request that they pay the account and debit same against the rents from the property in the same proportion as the rents are allocated. Carried.


Storm damage - W G Beard

The Diocesan Treasurer forwarded a copy of a letter he had received from W G Beard, regarding damage to a shed caused through a shed having been blown down. [On the Church Acre.]

After considerable discussion Mr Russell moved and Mr Coleman seconded That before any action is taken a legal opinion be obtained as to liability.

The motion on being put was declared lost on the voices.

It was resolved that on the motion of Mr Ninnes That the root of the tree be shifted, the damage to the shed repaired and that the work be left in the hands of Mr Penistone to get carried out, and that the cost of same be paid by the Diocesan Treasurer and charged against the rents in the same proportion as the rents are credited to the different parishes.


Hal Caton

Mr Hal Caton forwarded a letter offering to supply the vestry with a Tellus cleaner on certain terms. In reply that Mr Hal Caton be thanked for his letter and informed in view of the financial position of the parish, the vestry regrets they are unable to entertain his offer.


Voluntary organists

It was resolved That in view of the valued services rendered by Mrs Coleman and Miss Henderson in acting as organists That they each be presented with some token of recognition to the value of £1, the question of purchasing some present to be left to the Vicar.


Offertories

Messrs Penistone and Clark were appointed to take up the offertories for December, Hyde and Ramsay for January and Hale and Peacock for February. 


The meeting closed with the Grace.
