Minutes of Vestry Meeting held in the Vicarage on Tuesday, March 27, 1934, at 8.15 p.m. (Pages 229-230)


Present

The Vicar presiding; Churchwardens Maunsell and Ninnes; Vestrymen Hosking, Hale, Hyde, Clark, Penistone, Russell, Coleman, Peacock and Denbee.

Minutes

The minutes of the vestry meeting held on Tuesday, February 27 were read and confirmed. 


Correspondence

Tennis Club

A letter was received from the Tennis club thanking the Vestry for allowing them the use of the Hall, and advising they had donated a sum of £5 to the Parish Hall Fund.

Mr Clark moved and Mr Maunsell seconded That the club be thanked for their donation and informed their action in making the donation voluntarily, is all the more appreciated by the vestry. Carried.


A C Major

Mr A C Major wrote tendering his resignation as a member of the Board of Governors of St Matthew's School.

The Vicar moved that Mr Major's resignation be accepted with sincere regret and that this vestry place on record their honest appreciation of the faithful services Mr Major has rendered the school over a long number of years. Seconded by Mr Maunsell and carried.


St Matthew's School

The Secretary of St Matthew's School advised the vestry that Mr Major, one of the vestry's representatives on the Board of Governors, had tendered his resignation and asking to be informed of the name of Mr Major's successor for the remainder of the term, viz, December 1, 1934.

The Vicar moved That Mr Peacock be elected the Vestry's representative on the board for the remainder of the term. Seconded by Mr Maunsell and carried.


Financial Statement

Mr Ninnes moved That the financial statement be received and accounts amounting to £7.8.9 passed for payment. Seconded by Mr Clark and carried.


Earthquake damage

The Vicar detailed the damage to the church caused by the recent earthquake [Pahiatua earthquake, on 5 March 1934.].

It was resolved on the motion of Mr Ninnes, seconded by Mr Penistone, that two crosses be re-erected on the church.

That a sub-committee consisting of Messrs Penistone and Clark be set up to decide on the material of which the crosses are to be constructed and that they be given power to act.


Vicarage fence

It was resolved that in terms of effecting necessary repairs to the wooden portion of the vicarage fence, That the same be dismantled; and new gates with concrete posts be erected in place of the existing gates and that the work be left to Mr Penistone to carry out.


Technical School

The Vicar reported he had received an application from the Technical School for permission to use the tennis club courts for the purpose of playing basket ball.

It was resolved that before taking any action that the views of the Tennis Club Trust be obtained.


Annual Meeting

It was resolved That the annual meeting of parishioners be held on Tuesday, April 24, at 7.30 and that the matter of providing refreshments be left in the hands of the Churchwardens.


Offertories

Messrs Peacock and Denbee were appointed to take up the offertories for March.


The meeting closed with the Grace.
