September 1922 Vestry Meeting

Minutes of Vestry Meeting held in the Old Church Building on Wednesday, September 27, 1922, at 8 p.m. (Page 9-10)


Present

The Vicar presiding; Rev Moir; Churchwarden Hale; Vestrymen Evans, Trimen, Hyde, Whitton, Clark and Denbee.

Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Major, Blackman and Best.


Minutes

The minutes of the last Vestry meeting held on Tuesday, August 29 were read and confirmed.


Plans and specifications new church

The Secretary produced letters received from the Executors of the late Mr Mountfort in connection with the plans and specifications of the incomplete portion of the New Church and the Vestry's resolutions dealing with the aforesaid letters; and further the Secretary explained after the last meeting of the vestry he had written the executors, referring them to a previous letter to which they had not replied and so far he had received no reply.

It was resolved that the matter be left in abeyance until the next Vestry meeting.


Organ repairs

Mr Hyde moved and Mr Whitton seconded that the action of the Vicar and Mr Hale in calling in Messrs Lyttle to overhaul engine in connection with the organ be confirmed.


Watt

It was resolved that the resolution passed at the previous meeting appointing Mr Watt to supervise the pump room of the organ at a remuneration of £5 per year "be rescinded".


Kuripunui assessment

The Vicar mentioned that at a recent meeting of the committee of the Church of the Epiphany they had considered the question of the amount they should contribute toward the general expenses in connection with the Parish and that they had agreed to assess themselves at £100 up to the end of the church's financial year.


Financial Statement

The financial statement as appearing on page 757 was read and accounts appearing on page 729 are passed for payment.


Parish House

for Mr Moir be referred to the old committee.


Parish Social/First Communion

The Vicar mentioned the matter of holding a Parish Social, he also stressed the importance of the newly-confirmed candidates partaking of their first Communion being cared for by the older communicants of the Parish and suggested that a breakfast should be arranged on the Sunday morning (probably Advent Sunday) on which the candidates first took their communion.

It was resolved on the motion of Mr Denbee that in view of the fact that quite recently a very fine welcome social for the Vicar and Mrs Bullock had been held, that the question of having a parish social be not considered, but in place thereof a breakfast, somewhat on the lines indicated by the Vicar be arranged.

The pros and cons of such a breakfast to be left to the Churchwardens to report to the next meeting of the Vestry.


Offertories

Messrs Denbee and Waddington were appointed to take up the offertories for October.


Vote of condolence

The Vicar having expressed in eulogistic terms to the services rendered by the late Mr A J Welch, Mr Hale moved and Mr Whitton Seconded That this Vestry of St Matthew's, Masterton, places on record its sincere appreciation of the willing services rendered and as an exemplary member of the Vestry by the late Mr A Welch.

It tenders to the Widow and family its deepest sympathy in the sad bereavement which has befallen them. [See obituary below}


The motion was carried in silence.

The meeting closed with the Grace.

Obituary Mr Arthur Welch

The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday, from pleurisy and pneumonia, of a well-known and highly respected resident of Masterton, Mr Arthur Welch. Deceased had only been ill a little over a week, and the news of his death came as a shock to his many friends. Deceased was very popular with all classes of the community, and was closely associated with various kinds of sport in the town, particularly football and cricket. He was formerly a member of the Carlton Cricket Club, and did valuable work in organising St Matthew's Cricket Club. He was a member of the old Oriental Football Club in Masterton. He was a vestryman of St Matthew's Church, and an old member of the CEMS.

Deceased was 46 years of age, being born at Willow Park, Opaki. He was a son of the late Mr and Mrs Henry Welch. He leave a widow (a daughter of Mr F King) and three children (two sons and a daughter). He also leaves five brothers (Messrs A J Welch, Harry Welch, W Welch and Edward Welch, of Masterton, and Alfred Welch, Wellington), and two sisters (Mesdames Frank Redman, Wellington, and Bray, Wellington.

The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon, leaving the residence Chapel Street, at 2 o'clock for the Masterton cemetery.
