PARISH FESTIVAL
AND GALA

September 1967

BISHOP'S LETTER

MOTHERS AND OTHERS.

Annual General Meetings are not notorious for enthusiasm, and not everybody would look for exhilaration in the M.U. But I must confess that the 1967 A.G.M. of the Wellington M.U. gave at least one person a genuine experience of enthusiasm and exhilaration.

I assure members of the M.U. of my confidence in them as agents of Christ in his Church, because I see that its members both draw inspiration from its historic past and face the challenge of today and tomorrow. We believe that we can meet the needs of this generation of women and the next best if we have put in order first our own discipline about membership. This is to be considered in London at the world-wide M.U. Conference in 1968. Let us pray for their guidance into truth, and our own.

Meantime I ask you to continue to face up to the needs of today and tomorrow in the following ways

2. in finding a way to discuss between parents and teenage children an agreed programme in matters of home discipline and boy-girl relation ships. M.U. is already co-operating with Parent-Teacher Associations in promoting conferences for this purpose, and could do more.

3. in finding means by which unmarried women can contribute to the life of the Church their own particular talents. This means co-operation between M.U. and other women's guilds and fellowships.

God bless you.

+HENRY WELLINGTON.

COMMENTS ON RELIGIOUS BROADCASTS.

The Diocesan Religious Broadcasting Committee invites comments on Anglican broadcasts and T.V. programmes. The Committee already has a number of official monitors to whom it is much indebted, but the desire which leads to this invitation is to obtain an even wider listener or viewer reaction. The aim is always to improve what is done in this field. Comments on local broadcasts should be sent to the Vicarage, Masterton, and those which refer to other programmes either to St. Matthew's Vicarage, or direct to the secretary of the Diocesan Religious Broad casting Committee, the Rev. R. H. Easton, 14 Farm Road, Wellington. Archdeacon Venimore is chairman of this Committee.

SEPTEMBER: GALA, AND OTHER SPECIAL EVENTS.

HAVE WE FORGOTTEN?

Throughout the years of that great conflict, in which the freedom of the world hung in the balance, there was much to remind us of the unassailable truth that our dependance is upon God. We had days of prayer then, when the forces of the aggressor were advancing, and night after night throughout the wars years the voice of Big Ben sounded out at 9 p.m. from the radio stations in New Zealand, and we were called at this time every day to prayer. We took seriously when we were up against it, with our back to the wall, the warning of Holy Scripture: "But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish. As the nations which the Lord destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the Lord your God." (Deut. 8, 19).

The observance of BATTLE OF BRITAIN SUNDAY brings us hard up against these basic spiritual truths, written into the laws of the universe. Does New Zealand live today as in dependence upon God? Do you personally? Or have slackness and apathy claimed you as a victim?

The Service of Commemoration will be at 7 p.m. on Sun day, September 17th, at St. Matthew's. The preacher will be the Rev. Canon V. W. Joblin, who served as a chaplain with the R.N.Z.A.F. After the Commemoration Service, in the Parish Hall, Group Captain A. F. Tucker, Director of Operations, R.N.Z.A.F., will speak about the significance of this day of remembrance to us in the contemporary world.

Supper will be arranged by the Fireside Circle. Members of the A.T.C. and of Masterton's civic and servicemen's organizations will attend.

AFRICA SPEAKS!

Africa is continually in the news as a place of change and turmoil, and often of violence and revolution. The Rev. R. J. Taylor, formerly of this parish, will give a public address (illustrated) at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19th, in the Parish Hall, under the auspices of the evening branch of the Mothers' Union. ALL parishioners are invited to attend. Mr. Taylor will also preach at St. Matthew's at 10 a.m. on Diocesan Sunday, September 26th.

DIOCESAN SUNDAY: SEPTEMBER 26th.

On Diocesan Sunday we are reminded that our parish is a unit in the great Diocese of Wellington, and that we have a place of responsibility in participation in major Christian enterprises such as can be tackled only by the larger unit. The Vicar and Churchwardens of another parish (not yet named) will visit us at Masterton, and the visiting Vicar will preach at Evensong and the Churchwardens of that parish will read the lessons.

YOUTH HALL RE-HALLOWING.

The Youth Hall Rehallowing will take place on Sunday October 1st, the Thanksgiving Sunday which is the climax of our Parish Festival. Immediately after the ceremony of Clypping the Church at the 2.30 p.m. Family service, all are asked to assemble at the Youth Hall, where the Archdeacon will conduct the rehallowing and ask a blessing and guidance upon all who use the building. A special invitation to all who worked on the job. Would you please takes this notice as being a personal invitation.

The bus will return all passengers to the points of departure immediately after the Youth Hall Rehallowing (about 3.30 p.m.) Please make full use of this special facility provided for your convenience.

GALA

Bill (raising his hat as he rushes by): "SORRY. CAN'T STOP. I'M OFF TO ST. MATTHEW'S GALA!"

Jill (smiling triumphantly): "DON'T APOLOGIZE. ACTU ALLY I'LL GET THERE FIRST. YOU'LL SEE!""

Spring Flower Services

The golden wattle, and the early bulbs bursting through the soil in Masterton's gardens have heralded the coming of spring. Spring is nature's time of awakening. It is also the time for us to awaken spiritually if we have fallen into the dull, lax and soul destroying lethargy of winter hibernation.

For air and sunshine, pure and sweet,
We thank our heavenly Father;
For grass that grows beneath our feet,
We thank our heavenly Father:
For lovely flowers and blossoms gay,
For trees and woods in bright array,
For birds that sing in joyful lay,
We thank our Heavenly Father.

The traditional Spring Flower Services will be held in September. For all His mercies to us we shall thank our Heavenly Father!

NEWS FROM THE EPIPHANY SUB-DISTRICT.

An important date to remember this month is the 9th. This is the Ladies' Guild Annual Sale of Work. The Sale will be held in the Epiphany Hall, the doors opening sharp at 2.30 p.m. It has been the custom to hold the Epiphany Festival in November near the date on the Foundation Stone of the Church. This year we are making a change for a special reason. We have been fortunate enough to be able to have with us for the Festival the Reverend Ron. Taylor, who is on furlough from Africa. Many will remember Mr. and Mrs. Taylor their days in Masterton.

While in New Zealand on furlough Mr. Taylor is subject to the direction of the Board of Missions and they have decreed that he shall be elsewhere in November. For this reason we have changed our date to the 3rd December. Further information will be given later but please make of this date and time... SUNDAY, 3rd DECEMBER.

Annual Festivals are important events in the life of a Parish. It is a what the Church means to them. St. Matthew's will be celebrating their Patronal Festival next month and we will join them for their Festal Evensong and Procession of Banners as we always do. This will be on Sunday, 1st October. There will be NO Evensong at The Epiphany on that night. Information elsewhere in this issue concerning St. Matthew's Festival.

May God Bless You.

GEO. SIMPSON.
