THE VICAR’S LETTER

My Dear Parishioners—

There has been a splendid response to the call of Lent this year. Every Sunday has seen splendid services and the number of Communicants has exceeded greatly that of former years. The weekday celebrations on Wednesday and Thursday have been very well attended indeed and the Wednesday evening services have maintained the standard of former years. Lent will soon be over and I ask you all to make full use of the remaining days to deepen and strengthen your own lives and so deepen and strengthen the life of the parish.

May the joy of Easter be yours in all its fulness.

QUIET AFTERNOON.

An opportunity for a helpful and inspiring afternoon presents itself to ladies of the parish on Monday, 4th April, beginning at 2 p.m., in the Common Room. Here is a glorious chance for deepening friendship and of quiet fellowship with God. The devotions will be conducted and addresses given by Mrs. F. Wallis, of Lower Hutt. The first meeting will he held in the Common Room and will be followed by afternoon tea and then all will go to the Chapel for the final session. We hope that many will take advantage of this special opportunity.

EASTER DAY.

The glorious festival of the Resurrection is one of the happiest days in the year. We hardly need the injunction of the Prayer Book that on this day all communicants are required to make their communion. The Message of this day touches all, and on that, of all days, every communicant desires to join in the Lord’s Own Service.

At St. Matthew’s there will be celebrations of the Holy Communion at

6 a.m.,

7 a.m.,

8 a.m. and

11 a.m, (choral).

Children’s service will be at 10 a.m., and

Evensong at 7 p.m.

There will be celebrations at the Church of the Epiphany at 9 a.m. and at Upper Plain at 10 a.m.

Evensong will be held at Rangitumau at 1.45 p.m., at Kopuaranga at 2.45 p.m., and at Kuripuni at 7 p.m.

On the Sunday after Easter, the Holy Communion will be celebrated at Taueru at 10 a.m.

Any who are unable to make their Easter Communion in church are asked to notify the Vicar so that arrangements may be made for them to receive the Sacrament in hospital or in their homes.

We shall be glad of flowers for the Easter decorations and of help at 3 p.m. on Saturday, 16th April, in preparing the Church for Easter.

GOOD FRIDAY.

On. this sacred day Christians will desire to "watch with Christ." and by their presence and sympathy reveal their thankfulness and love for the great gift of salvation won for them on the Cross. Good Friday can be one of the most helpful days in the whole year.

The services at St. Matthew’s will be:

8 a.m., Litany and Ante-Communion;

10 a.m., Matins and Sermon;

12 noon to 3 p.m., Three Hours’ Service, conducted by the Vicar.

At the Church of the Epiphany there will he a service at 9 a.m..

PALM SUNDAY.

This day, which falls on Sunday, 10th April, will be marked by special services at St. Matthew ’s. There will be 

Holy Communion at 8 a.m.

At 11 a.m. the annual children’s procession of palms will he held, and the choir will render "The March to Calvary."

At 7 p.m., following a C.E.M.S. renewal service the Choir will render Stainer’s inspiring work, "The Crucifixion."

These services will be a fitting and inspiring help as we enter the most sacred week of the year.

SUNDAY SCHOOL LIBRARY

Considerable use is being made of this library by the Sunday School children this year. More books, especially those suited for younger children, from 8 to 12 years, would be most useful. Perhaps some parishioners have children’s books which are no longer needed by them. Such books would be a welcome addition to our library, and parishioners can be sure that they would thus have a further period of usefulness. Those who have books to give are asked to leave them at the Vicarage.  

PARISH NOTES.

An impressive little service was held at the Public Hospital on Sunday, 26th February, when the Bishop confirmed one of the patients, and again the following day when the Holy Communion was celebrated in the ward. We express our appreciation to the unfailing helpfulness of the hospital staff in making arrangements for such occasional services.

Bright and happy services marked our harvest festival day. There were good congregations and the harvest gifts were appreciated at Sedgley.

Opportunity was taken at our Scout Garden Party, which was a great success, to make a  presentation to Miss N. McEwen. as a token of appreciation of her loyal, efficient and devoted service as Cubmaster.

Particularly pleasing is the growth of both senior and junior Bible Classes this year. Members are keen about the coming Bible Class Youth Campaign. Our young people will play their part.

We acknowledge with grateful thanks an anonymous donation of £30 for parish funds which has been allocated as follows:

Junior SS., etc., Building Fund, £15;

Taueru Church Repairs Fund, £12 1s 9d (balance required);

Lantern Fund,  £1 18s 5d (for new light projector and accessories,

Vicarage Repairs Fund, £10. 

On Sunday, 19th March, a happy Yankee tennis tournament was held by St. Matthew’s Club in honour of three members who have rendered great service. Misses E. Hosking and I Carle are to be married shortly and Miss M. Penistone has always taken a keen interest in the club’s activities, The Vicar made reference to their splendid work and made presentations to them on behalf of their fellow-members of the Club.

Many will be looking forward to the opening of the Girls’ Cub. The annual meeting of the Club to start the new season’s activities, will be held on Wednesday, 19th April, at 7.45 p.m, in the Common Room of the Parish Hall, Old and new members will be welcome,

The Sedgley Committee have been cheered by the action of an anonymous friend of the boys who heard that the  Home was faced with at heavy expense to provide College uniforms. and made a donation of £32 to meet this cost.

KURIPUNI NOTES.

The Huntley School picnic was a very successful and happy function, thanks to the willing help of many workers, We are grateful to all who helped.

The Good Friday service at the Church of the Epiphany will he held at 9 a.m., and the monthly celebration  of the Holy Communion will be on Easter Day at 9 a.m.

Miss McClymont, who has rendered faithful and appreciated service as organist at Kuripuni has had to give up this duty.  We thank her for her splendid service so willingly given. We are very fortunate in that Mrs. W. G. Ferry has most kindly consented to take up the work.

SUNDAY SCHOOL CONCERT.

One of the most popular events of the year is the annual concert presented by the children of St. Matthew’s Sunday School. This year’s promises to be a particularly good concert. All sections 0f the School will be assisting. The tiny tots will have their share, some good individual items will he presented. and two concerted items will be given. We hope to see the usual crowded hall for this function, which will be held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday, 27th April, at 5 p.m. Prices for admission will be 1/- for adults and 6d for children. Proceeds will be for the Sunday School funds.

POLYNESIA.

Masterton is fortunate in that it is to have a visit from Bishop Kempthorne of Polynesia. The Bishop has an inspiring story to tell of work among the islands of the Western Pacific, which comprise his scattered Diocese. Only the help of the British Navy enables the Bishop to visit distant parts, though, by cargo boat and otherwise, he goes yearly to all parts of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. The Bishop will speak in the Parish Hall on Thursday, 21st April, at 8 p.m., illustrating his story with lantern slides. The Hall should be packed for this outstanding event.

LANTERN SERVICES.

These have been appreciated by the children and have proved an excellent method of teaching. We should like to see even larger attendances for the remaining services. These will be held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, 5th April, at 7.30 p.m., and at Kuripuni on Thursday, 7th April, at 7.30 p.m. The final lantern services which always make a wide appeal and are such a help in bringing home the Holy Week and Good Friday Message will consist of a series of slides on the Crucifixion, and will he held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, 12th April, at 7.30 p.m., and at Kuripuni on Wednesday, 13th April, at 7.30 p.m. No child and no adult can attend this service without getting a truer understanding of the meaning of the central message of our faith.
