May 30, 1929, Vestry Meeting
Minutes of Vestry held in Common Room on Thursday, May 30, 1929, at 7.30 p.m.
Present
Vicar presiding; Churchwardens Hosking and Smith; Vestrymen Ninnes, Hyde, Dunderdale, Clarke, Penistone, Green, Hickson and Denbee.
An apology was received from Mr Hale.
Minutes
The Minutes of the last Vestry meeting held on the 23 March, also the Minutes of special meetings held on Wednesday, April 24 and Thursday, May 10, 1929, were read and confirmed.
Girl Guides
A letter was received from the Hon. District Secretary and the Girl Guides' [?] asking the Vestry to return a cupboard in the Parish Hall purchased by the Girl Guides.
Mr Dunderdale moved and Mr Clarke seconded that the matter be left to the Vicar to report on at the next meeting of the Vestry. Mr Green moved an amendment and Mr Smith seconded That the cupboard be not handed over until such time as a company of Girl Guides is formed in St Matthew's. The amendment, on being put, was carried.
Oddfellows' Lodge
An application was received from the Independent Order of Oddfellows for the use of the Old Parish Hall for meetings of their Juvenile Lodge on one night a month.
It was resolved that in view of the Resolution of the Vestry some months since, whereby the Hall is not to be let to anyone outside the Church societies, That the Oddfellows be informed the Vestry regrets it is unable to grant their application.
Hall Committee
In the matter of the recommendation from the Parishioners' meeting to the incoming Vestry, concerning an allowance to the Curate for the upkeep of his car, We have no recommendation to make.
Hon. Auditors
It was resolved that the question of finding auditors to audit the Church accounts be left to Mr Dunderdale to report to the next meeting of the Vestry.
Administrative
Mr Denbee moved and Mr Ninnes seconded that the Bank Manager be asked to attend at the next meeting of the Vestry for the purpose of obtaining the signatures of the Vestry to a joint and several guarantee for the accounts at the Bank in association with St Matthew's Church accounts. Carried.
Financial statement
The Financial Statement as appearing on Page [blank] was adopted and accounts appearing thereon passed for payment. It was resolved that Pickering Brothers' account in connection with Vicarage Repairs be passed for payment.
Insurance
Mr Dunderdale moved and Dr Hosking seconded that Mr Dyer notify the insurance people that additions have been made to the Church, by the erection of a Clergy Vestry and Side Chapel and that the Vestry wishes the additions to be covered under the same policy as the one now covering the Church, and that the amount of the cover remain as at present, viz 7,500 [pounds].
Messrs Smith, Hosking, Dunderdale and Green were appointed to go into the matter of insurances on all Church Property.
Additions to Church: Final Payment
That the Final payment as per the Architect's certificate amounting to £147.16.6 owing to Messrs Judd & Russell on Completion of the Clergy Vestry and Side Chapel be passed for payment.
It was resolved on the motion of the Vicar, seconded by Dr Hosking, that a letter of appreciation and thanks be sent to the Architect for the careful manner and the interest he has taken in the erection of the additions to the Church.
It was also resolved that a letter be sent the Builders, Messrs Judd & Russell, conveying the Vestry's appreciation and satisfaction of the faithful manner in which they had carried out their contract.
The Vicar moved that a letter be sent Mr Guernsey[?], expressing the Vestry's appreciation of the efficient manner in which he has executed the work entrusted to him to carry out in the matter of the Interior Decorations of the Church.
Curate Fund
The Vicar moved and Mr Ninnes seconded that application be made forthwith to the Diocesan Treasurer for a further £100 to the Curate Fund from the Fund held by them for the purpose.
Finance Committee
It was resolved that Mr Green be elected to the Finance Committee in place of Mr Major and that the Finance Committee bring down their report to the next meeting of the Vestry.
Lavatory at Old Church
It was resolved that the question of disposing of the lavatory at the Old Church be left in the hands of Messrs Hyde and Denbee. Carried.
The Vicar's action in the matter of disposing of the curtain brackets for Tenui for £1 was confirmed.
Beautifying Society
Dr Hosking brought up the matter of the Beautifying Society building a rock garden fronting Church Street on the site used for the Parish Hall. It was resolved that Dr Hosking be asked to inform the Beautifying Society, whilst the Vestry very much appreciates their offer, they cannot see their way to accept same.
Cemetery Cleanup
Mr Denbee explained the gist of a letter sent the Vestry from the Borough Council, concerning certain proposals in connection with a cemetery cleanup.
Mr Dunderdale moved and Mr Hyde seconded That the Borough Council be given authority to clean up that portion of the Cemetery set apart for Church of England burials, at the Council's expense.
Offertories
Messrs Clark and Dunderdale were appointed to take up the offertories for June.
The meeting closed with the Grace.
