BISHOP'S LETTER
AT THE LORD'S TABLE.
Those of you who were present in the last stages of this year's Synod will recall the discussion of the motion relating to inter-communion. Almost immediately afterwards on July 3 the Press Association received a statement from the Archbishop on the subject which I will quote again.
"The Archbishop of New Zealand (The Most Reverend N. A. Lesser) announced today that he has communicated with the Appellants regarding an appeal against the Statute No. 279 as passed by General Synod on 22 April, 1966.
This Statute relates to the admission to Holy Communion within the Churches of the Province of New Zealand of members of other Churches under certain specified conditions. Resulting from consultation the position is that for procedural reasons the Statute is inoperative, the appeal though not with-drawn will not continue, and the questions raised will be the subject of discussion in connection with the Report from the Commission on Intercommunion at the next ensuing Session of General Synod to take place in Wellington in April 1968. The appellants are welcome to present evidence to this Commission. This means that the Status quo ante is resumed."
That means that for our Diocese we shall revert to the position which obtained before General Synod in 1964 passed the Statute to add a new Canon 7 to Title G.
In the meantime the Provincial Commission appointed by General Synod to consider and report on this whole subject will be continuing its work. Please pray earnestly that we may be guided in judgement and may so report to General Synod next year as to develop a common mind in the Churches about our attitude to one another at the Lord's Table during the negotiations that have already been begun, issuing in the Act of Commitment, and during any further negotiations, and conversations with other Churches not yet taking part in the work of the Joint Com mission.
I do not recall any serious difficulties in this connection in the diocese before the General Synod of 1964, but things have changed and are still changing. So if you are in any doubt where duty lies in this matter please do not hesitate to consult me, in order that guided by the Holy Spirit we may learn how to do the truth.

SEPTEMBER GALA
An enthusiastic meeting of representatives from about twelve organisations associated with St. Matthew's was held recently to consider the holding of a GALA. It was decided to set all the machinery in motion at once to make this a great and momentous occasion. The target is set at $1,300.
The various organisations each undertook to sponsor various aspects of the function, and were empowered to bring in any help they could from other interested parishioners.
Since the meeting, after consultation with the P.R.O., the date has been set at September 30th, to avoid clashing with other community efforts.
"Gossip" is usually a suspect word, but here is a kind of gossip we can honestly recommend to you. Talk as much as you can to your friends and neighbours about this forth coming big-scale effort, and ask everyone to keep this date free. You can help by stirring up enthusiasm for this mighty project
We have been asked by a group of country parishioners: "Can we help?" The answer is: "Yes, indeed you can. Thank you for your willing offer of assistance! We shall let you know very soon how you can participate actively in this effort for the well-being of the parish."
Remember, One and All!
ST. MATTHEW'S GALA
Saturday, September 30th
on the Church Grounds.
Our Country Districts
St. Alban's Taueru.
The Patronal Festival Service was a most exhilarating occasion and we were delighted to welcome such a keen company of young people from the Vicar's Group of St. Matthew's Bible Class, Captain Sutcliffe's rousing address gave us a good stirring up, as it was obviously designed to do. We appreciated having a Bible Class Choir to lead the singing, and record with thanks the hospitality provided by a keen group of Taueru ladies, concerning whose knowledge of the culinary art there is no question!
Bideford.
Congratulations on the good attendance at Evensong. There seems to be a spirit of progress abroad amongst us! We may well take as our motto some well known words from a hymn: "Strengthen Thy Church to abide as a city, set on a hill for a light to Thy fold."
AROUND THE PARISH CHURCH
Contributions for this section should reach the Vicar from the reporting organisations by the Tenth of each Month.
District Visitors' Guild.
We welcome two new members to the Guild: Mrs. R. B. Robertshawe, whose district comprises Bannister Street, and Mrs. J. W. Manks who will take responsibility for Colombo Road north. At our last meeting we were privileged to have an address from Captain H. Sutcliffe on the work of a District Visitor. The thoughts presented were both invigorating and scripturally based.
St. Matthew's Lansdowne Young Wives.
Our attendances of late have been consistently good--in fact our membership is expanding steadily. We have enjoyed the help of three able speakers over the course of our recent meetings: Mrs. J. Maunsell, a Sister from the Home of Compassion (Island Bay) and Capt. Sutcliffe. Each of these addresses has been followed by rewarding discussion and we thank them for the time they have given to our Group.
Wairarapa Marriage Guidance Council.
The Council advises that four lecture-discussion evenings on Preparation for Marriage will be held in Masterton on Tuesdays, September 19th October 10th inclusive. For further information and enrolment please contact the Secretary, Wairarapa Marriage Guidance Council, P.O. Box 308, Masterton.
YOUTH SECTION
St. Matthew's Guides.
The Guide Company continues to grow in vigour under the direction welcome all other Guide Companies in Masterton to a big rally to be held of Mrs. Paul, assisted by Mrs. Challis. On August 7th our Company will welcome all other Guide Companies in Masterton to a big rally to be held at St Matthew's. We expect to make use of the Youth Hall for this important gathering.
St. Matthew's Bible Classes.
A meeting of leaders and representative members has taken place to consider the organisation of social activities, and to plan programmes for our Youth Club.
We have decided to meet fortnightly as a Youth Club, in the meanwhile, commencing on the last Friday of July. The meetings will continue during the school holidays, to maintain continuity. The whole thing has a "new look" and we intend to bring the Youth Hall into immediate use. There is still a bit of exterior painting to do, and we plan to complete this at once.
We are delighted that quite a number of our members are to be confirmed and look forward to the increased participation in the life and worship of the Parish Church that this will open up to us.
St Matthew's Sunday Schools
The highlight amongst Sunday School events was the Children's Mission, conducted by Captain Sutcliffe. We enjoyed this a great deal. Even on the coldest days about 200 children arrived for the "Happy Half Hour", and on Sunday the Church was full for the Family Eucharist.
The Wairarapa Archdeaconry Sunday School Competitions are to be held at Carterton this year, and will include Choirs and Bible Readings only this time. This is to make the competitions less unweildy, with so many entrants. In this way, everything should go ahead with the greatest smoothness, and we look forward to as many chldren as possible taking part on Saturday, October 7th. Competitions for the other kinds of event will be held next year.
CHRIST THE LIGHT AND ST. PATRICK.
The following article was written for this magazine by Sandy Buzzalini, an American Field Scholar studying at St. Matthew's College.
"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill, cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick-and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matthew 5, 14-16.
This, passage seems to have influenced St. Patrick. He went forth to a "dark" land to shine his light and spread the good news to the Irish heathen. His cathedral at Armagh can be compared to a city on a hill or the light in a candlestick. St. Patrick did not want to hide Christianity, but wanted it to be known; on a hill and seen by all.
This is Christ's advice to His disciples and all his followers, including everyone today. Christ wants Christians to witness for Him, to shine their light. This does not necessarily means that he wants everyone to be a nun, a clergyman, or to go up to someone, force them to sit down, and tell them a long story about Christ or your own personal calling. I feel that this commandment means that Christ wants everyone to live as God would want and to be living examples of Christ's work. However, if a man has learned something wonderful and it makes him happy, he wants to share it with others. Good news does not make a good secret. So it is with life and resurrection of Jesus and all he taught us about our Father. It is only natural that people should spread "the news", take it out from under the bushel and let it be seen from the candlestick. Each person can be a light for those in darkness. This is what Christ wants from his followers.

NEWS FROM THE EPIPHANY SUB-DISTRICT.
Epiphany Roundup.
The newly elected Epiphany Council has met for the first time since the Annual Meeting. The members are: Mesdames C. Lacey, J. Cunningham, D. Potter and Messrs. W. Clinton-Baker, W. Fleming, K. R. Clark, J. A. Hudson, J. Louisson, H. Stewart and J. D. Hutchison. Mrs. C. Lacey has been elected Secretary. phone 5593. Her address is 27 Bledisloe Street, stone, phone 27-801. Stewardship: Mr. W. L. Clinton-Baker, Tupurupuru, Gladstone, phone 27-801.
Speaking of phone numbers, I am still having some trouble over our own phone number. Please note that it is 5333.
I am delighted to be able to say that from the first Sunday in August we shall have, with the exception of the third Sunday, a full complement of Organists at the morning celebrations of Holy Communion and the Liturgy. There is still one other avenue to explore and it is hoped that we may even have an organist for the third Sunday as well before long.
We are told in the Acts of the Apostles that the Spirit descended upon the Apostles in the midst of a noise "like a rushing mighty wind." Perhaps these words could aptly describe the descent upon us, the stay and the departure of one Captain Harry Sutcliffe !!! Comments on Captain Sutcliffe and the Mission I have had from the children in the last week have ranged from "Neat!" through "Fab." to one starry-eyed eleven year old who sighed ecstatically and said "Wonderful".
From my own point of view THE experience of the Mission was the Family Eucharist at the Intermediate School Hall. Our grateful thanks to the School Committee for allowing us to use the Hall. Our thanks also to Mr. C. Carew the wood-work master at the school for making and erecting for us a Cross on the "East" wall (back of stage). The Hall was very easily converted into a delightful Chapel.
Many have said how they were inspired by the sight of children and parents worshipping together at the Eucharist--the children to be blessed and the parents to receive the Sacrament. Some have asked if the Service could be repeated. Certainly I would hope so and perhaps, with a bit of thought, we could have another such Service towards the end of the year. Over all our thanks to Harry Sutcliffe for firing us with some of his enthusiasm.
May God bless you all.
GEO. SIMPSON.
