August 1923 Vestry Meeting

Minutes of the Vestry Meeting held at the Vicarage on Thursday, August 20, 1923, at 7.30 p.m. (pages 37-38)


Present

The Vicar presiding; Churchwarden Hale; Vestrymen Herbert, Dunderdale, Hyde, Ball, Evans, Hosking, Waddington and Denbee.

An apology for absence was received from Mr Dodge.


Farewell and welcome social

It was resolved that St Matthew's Patronal Festival be held on Tuesday, September 25, 1923 and that advantage be taken to farewell the Rev. Moir and welcome the Rev. [Osborne] Gibson[1] and that the original social committee be responsible for the arrangements in connection with the social and that the social be held in the Social Hall, Municipal Buildings.

The Secretary was requested to send invitations to the choirs of Greytown and Carterton to attend the above social.


Girls' Club

A letter was received from the Secretary of the Girls' club asking the Vestry's permission to use the piece of ground at the back of the Church for the purpose of laying down a tennis court.

Dr Hosking moved and Mr Denbee seconded That the application be granted, subject to the churchwardens and Mr Herbert's supervision. Carried.

Mr Denbee moved and Mr Evans seconded that the matter of cutting down any trees necessary for the purpose of the Tennis Court be left in the hands of Dr Archer Hosking, with power to act.


Mr Drummond

The Secretary was instructed to convey to Mr Drummond the Vestry's thanks for the courtesy at all times extended by him in connection with the use of the school for the purpose of a Sunday School.


Financial statement

It was resolved that the Financial Statement as appearing on page 745 be adopted and accounts as appearing thereon totalling £33.17.10 passed for payment.


Kuripuni Committee

It was resolved that the Kuripuni Committee be written to asking them (in view of the stipend of the curate having to be paid monthly by the vestry) to kindly pay their assessment quarterly.


Proposed Parish Hall

It was resolved that a 20 weeks campaign be started on October 1, 1923, the object being to raise at least £1000 toward the building of a New Parish Hall and Sunday School, with Miss Vallance as Secretary and Mr Herbert assisting her in her work.


Offertories

Messrs Hyde and Trimen were appointed to take up the offertories for September.

[1] The Rev Osborne Stanley Oliver GIBSON (1895-1978) served as an assistant curate from in Masterton Parish from 1923-1925, resigning to become Vicar of Raetihi. From 1944 until 1961 he served as Dean of Waiapu and was instrumental in getting the new Napier Cathedral underway.
