Vestry Meeting

Minutes of Vestry Meeting held at the Vicarage on Thursday, June 29, 1924, at 7.30 p.m. (Pages 58-59)


Present

Rev Bullock presiding; Churchwardens Hosking and Hale; Vestrymen Best, Penistone, Hyde, Williams, Dunderdale, Herbert, Maunsell and Denbee.

An apology for absence was received from Mr McCartney.


Minutes

The Minutes of the last meeting of the Vestry, held on Thursday, May 29, 1924 were read and confirmed.


Correspondence

Diocesan Trustee

It was resolved that the letter from the Diocesan Trustees re the old St Matthew's Church and section be received.

Mr Denbee moved and Mr Hale seconded That the application from the Plunket Society for the use of the old Parish Hall on Friday, June 27th, from 2.30 to 4.30 be granted.


Power Board

In reply to the Power Board's notice re wiring St Matthew's Church and their account for £27.4.3, being 25% of the cost of installation, It was resolved that the Treasurer be instructed to pay the account forthwith.


Financial Statement

The Financial Statement as appearing on Page 742 was adopted and accounts totalling £37.6.0 appearing thereon passed for payment, subject however to the Printing Company account for £13.12.6 being held over until the next Vestry meeting. The Treasurer in the meantime to look into same.


Vicarage lighting

In connection with the vicarage lighting the Vicar explained

(1) he had instructed the contractor to allow additional points in certain positions and

(2) asked the Vestry to decide on the class of shade for his study, drawing room, etc.

Mr Denbee moved and Hyde seconded that the Vicar's action re the additional number of points be confirmed and that in the matter of the class of shade that it be left to the Vicar and Churchwardens with power to act.


Laurel Hedge

It was resolved that the Vicar be authorised to get the laurel hedge from Church Street to the end of the Parish Hall removed. [Church Acre?]


Ventilation Parish Hall

Mr Hyde moved and Mr Penistone seconded that the architect be contracted to cut out the mock ventilator from the roof of the Parish Hall altogether and that in place of laying field pipes for carrying off storm water, that a system of sumps be laid.  Carried.


Partitions for Sunday School

The sub-committee brought down their report on the matter of partitions for dividing the class rooms.

Mr Best moved and Dr Hosking seconded that the question of dividing the class rooms be approved as indicated by the sub-committee in their report and that Messrs Hyde and Penistone be empowered to carry out the work as suggested by them, forthwith.  Carried.


Finance Committee report

The Vicar reported on the work of the Finance Committee to date, stating briefly, the suggestion of the Finance Committee, whereby the Parish was to be divided into two heads [groups?]:

(1) Annual subscribers;

(2) those who preferred to make their offertories by means of the Envelope System

and whilst Mr McCartney had volunteered to undertake the secretaryship of the Envelope System, no one had been appointed Secretary for the Annual Subscribers.

It was resolved to hold over the question of appointing a secretary for the Annual Subscribers until the next meeting of the Vestry.


Organ water

Dr Hosking moved and Mr Hale seconded that the question of disposing of the water from the organ be by means of a sump in lieu of leading the water into the street gutter. [The organ was powered by water pressure from the municipal supply


Old Church Lavatories

Mr Hyde reported on the condition of the Lavatories in the Sunday School grounds and that he had been forced to incur certain expenditure in connection with getting them in order to comply with the requirements of the Sanitary Inspector.

It was resolved that Mr Hyde's action be endorsed and that the costs incurred be a charge on the Parish Hall funds.
