July 1934 Vestry Meeting

Minutes of the Vestry Meeting held at the Vicarage on Tuesday, July 31, at 8 pm. (Page 237-238)


Present

The Vicar presiding. Churchwarden Ninnes; Vestrymen Hyde, Black, Russell, Dr Hosking and Denbee.


Apologies

Apologies for absence Messrs Maunsell, Peacock, Penistone, Coleman and Ramsay.


Minutes

The minutes of the last meeting of the vestry held on Tuesday, June 21, 1934 were read and confirmed.


Diocesan Officer

In the matter of reporting to the Diocesan Trustees on the condition of church properties, It was resolved that Mr Penistone be asked to furnish a report.


New Curate

The Vicar reported

(1) That he had paid a special visit to St John's, Auckland, for the purpose of a personal interview with two students who would be leaving the college this year;

(2) That he had been impressed with one of the students and had offered him the position in Masterton, at the commencing salary of £150 p.a. and that the offer had been accepted and the student would commence his duties in Masterton in December next.

In connection with (1) Mr Ninnes moved That the Vicar be reimbursed his out of pocket expenses concerning his special trip to Auckland. Seconded by Mr Hyde and Carried.

(2) Mr Ninnes moved that the Vicar's action in engaging a deacon at £150 p a to commence with be confirmed and that the minute in the previous minute authorising the appointing of a deacon at £200 be amended accordingly. Seconded by Mr Russell and carried.


Mr McLevie

The Vicar informed the Vestry that Mr McLevie had been offered and had accepted the living at Roseneath in lieu of North East Valley. That the Roseneath appointment would not commence until October and that in the meantime Mr McLevie had offered to resume his duties in Masterton until Roseneath became vacant.

Mr Ninnes moved and Mr Hyde seconded That Mr McLevie's offer of his services to St Matthew's until October be accepted and that he be paid at the same rate of stipend as when he left. Carried.


Financial Statement

It was resolved That the Financial Statement be received and accounts amounting to £47.11.11 passed for payment.


Church roof

Mr Ninnes moved That the matter of repairs to the church roof at an approximate cost of £20 be left in the hands of Mr Penistone to take the necessary action and that he be given power to act. Seconded by Mr Clark and carried.


Vicarage papering

Mr Clark moved and Mr Russell seconded That Mr Spiers? be paid a progress payment of £6 in connection with the vicarage papering. Carried.


Fellowship breakfast

It was unanimously resolved That a letter  be sent to the ladies responsible for providing the fellowship breakfast, expressing the vestry's thanks for their great effort and that Mr Dunderdale be asked to forward the letter.


Vicar's Stipend

Mr Ninnes explained that the Finance Committee had given careful consideration to the matter of restoring the 10% cut in the Vicar's stipend, which the Vicar had voluntarily made.

That the committee had estimated very carefully the Receipts and Expenditure for the year and that leaving the stipend as at present we would finish the year with a debit in the Parish account of about £8. 

Mr Ninnes moved that 5% of the cut in the Vicar's Stipend be restored as from August 1, 1934 and that the position be again reviewed at the close of the financial year. Seconded by Mr Denbee and carried.


Offertories

Messrs Hyde and Ramsay were appointed to take up the offertories for August.


The meeting closed with the Grace.
