Minutes of Vestry [meeting] held at the Vicarage on Thursday, May, 29, 1924, at 8.15. p.m. (Page 55-57)


Present

The Vicar presiding. Churchwardens Hale and Hosking; Vestrymen Dunderdale, Batt, Hyde, Herbert, Williams, McCartney, [L.B.] Maunsell, Penistone, Denbee and Rev. Gibson.


Welcome

The Vicar, before commencing on the business of the Vestry, offered a warm welcome to the new members, stressing the point that there were many problems and much work ahead for their consideration and hoping that the same happy relationship would continue as in the past. The Vicar's expressed sentiments were heartily endorsed.


Minutes

The Minutes of the last ordinary meeting of the Vestry held on Friday, April 4th, 1924, were read and confirmed.


Vicarage lighting

The Vicar reported in connection with the change over in the vicarage lighting, that Mr and Mrs Morton had given him a car to be sold, the proceeds therefrom to be devoted toward the cost of the scheme.

It was resolved that Mr and Mrs Morton be accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for their generous and thoughtful action.

Dr Hosking moved and Mr McCartney seconded that the Power Board's tender be accepted for lighting the Vicarage and that the work be proceeded with immediately the car had been sold.

Mr Hale moved an amendment and Mr Penistone seconded That the Lighting of the Vicarage be proceeded with forthwith.

The amendment, on being put, was carried. The amendment then became the motion and on being put was declared carried.


Church lighting

Mr Herbert moved and Mr McCartney seconded that the question of lighting the Church be left in the hands of the Finance Committee.

Mr Hale moved an amendment and Mr Williams seconded, that the Vestry as a whole proceed with the church lighting.

The amendment was carried, which then became the motion and on being put was declared carried.

It was resolved that the offer of Dr Hosking to Loan the parish £50 for the purpose of paying the deposit on the cost of electrically lighting the church be accepted and that a special effort be made to get £50 by getting parishioners to donate £1 each for the purpose of refunding to Dr Hosking the amount of his advance.


Signing tender

Mr Hyde moved and Mr Dunderdale seconded That the Churchwardens be authorised to sign the acceptance of the Power Board's tender for lighting both the Church and Vicarage and that the matter of demolishing and disposing of the present gas lights be left to the Churchwardens.


Finance Committee

Mr Denbee moved and Mr Herbert Seconded that a Finance Committee be set up consisting of five members of the Vestry, Carried.

Mr Denbee moved and Mr Herbert seconded that the members of the Finance Committee be as follows, viz, Mr [L B] Maunsell, Dr Hosking, Mr Williams, Mr McCartney and Mr Dunderdale, with Mr Dyer in an advisory capacity. And that Mr McCartney be appointed Convenor of all meetings. Carried.


Diocesan Trustees

It was resolved that the Secretary be instructed to write to the Diocesan Trustees

(1) Applying for permission to sell or otherwise dispose of the old Church of St Matthew, and

(2) to advise the Trustees that Part Sec[tion] 1 Corner of Church and Dixon Street is available for leasehold or other purposes.


Financial Statement

The financial statement as appearing on Page 744 was adopted and accounts totalling £36.7.4 appearing thereon passed for payment.


St Matthew's School Trust Board

It was unanimously resolved that Mr L B. Maunsell be appointed one of the Vestry's Representatives on the St Matthew's Collegiate School Board of Trustees, in place of Mr T. Evans, resigned.


Parish Hall

In the matter of dividing the classrooms in the new Sunday School, it was resolved that Messrs Penistone and Hyde be appointed a sub-committee to bring down a report to the next meeting of the Vestry.


Offertories

Messrs Penistone and Hyde were appointed to take up the offertories for June.


The meeting closed with the Grace.
