______________

[1] The death occurred on Saturday morning [7 August 1926] of Mr T. R. [Thornton Richard] Best, of Essex Street, at the age of 46 years. The deceased contracted influenza from which death resulted, as recently as Thursday last.

The late Mr Best, who was born at Brightwater, Nelson, was for many years teaching at Stratford and Eketahuna, and for the last four or five years was on the staff of the Masterton West School. He was a member of St. Matthew's Church Vestry Commit- tee, and a lay-reader in the church, and was an enthusiastic member of the Masterton Bowling Club.

The deceased is survived by a widow and one daughter, to whom much sympathy will be extended.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon. Services, conducted by the Rev. W. Bullock, were held in St. Matthew's Church and at the grave- side. The pall-bearers included four members of the St. Matthew's Vestry, two members of the Masterton Bowling Club, a representative of the Master- ton West School Committee and the headmaster of that school. Thi coi tege was a particularly lengthy one, and a large number of beautiful wreaths were received.

[2] MR E. H. WADDINGTON.
The death occurred suddenly on Sunday at Paekakariki, of Mr Edward Horatio Waddington, formerly a well-known and highly respected resident of Masterton. The late Mr Waddington left Masterton quite recently, after many years' residence here, to live in retirement at Paekakariki. He was born at Wakefield, Yorkshire, and arrived in New Zealand in 1873 by the ship Hydaspes.

For some time Mr Waddington was in the employ of the Bank of New Zealand, and later established a general agency business in Masterton.

Among the secretaryships he held were those of the Masterton and Opaki Jockey Club, North Wairarapa Gun Club, Ancient Order of For- esters, United Ancient Order of Druids, Charitable Aid Board, and North Wairarapa Benevolent Trustees.

Later Mr Waddington became proprietor of a printing business, which subsequently merged with other firms under the name of the Masterton Printing Company, of which he was Printing Manager.

Mr Waddington was actively associated with the Wairarapa Caledonian Society, being for many years a director. He was a prominent member of the Masterton Tennis Club, an ardent worker in St. Matthew's Church, one of the foundation members of the Masterton Savage Club, and was associated with various other local institutions.

Mr Waddington was gentleman of sterling character. Prior to leaving Masterton he received a presentation from the master printers of the Wairarapa, as a token of the esteem in which he was held by those associated with the trade. A widow and grown-up family are left to mourn their loss, to whom general sympathy will be extended in their sad bereavement.

The funeral will leave St Matthew's Church, Masterton, this morning at 10.30 am. Members of the Druids' Lodge are invited to attend.
