Special Vestry Meeting
Minutes of Special Meeting of the Vestry held in the Common Room on Wednesday, April 22, 1925, at 8 p.m. (Page 76)
The Vicar presiding; Churchwardens Hosking and Hale; Vestrymen Hyde, McCartney, Best, Ball, Dunderdale, Williams, Denbee.
Appointment of organist
Moved by Mr McCartney That the position of Organist and Choirmaster be offered to Mr [C. Spencer] Compton at a salary of £100 per annum, that the organist commence his duties on the 1st of May 1925.
That his appointment be subject to the usual condition of relationship between Vicar and Organist. Seconded by Hyde and Carried.
Mr Denbee moved that the Vicar, in informing Mr Compton of his appointment, should embody in his letter such conditions as the Vicar thinks fit and get Mr Compton's acceptance of such conditions. Seconded by Mr McCartney and Carried.
The Vicar reported that the Revd J H Datson[1], Minister of the Masterton Congregational Church, had been accepted by the Bishop of the Diocese for Ordination in the Church of England asked the Vestry to vote a some of £50 if necessary toward the stipend of Mr Datson, who would start work in this Parish immediately after the ordination of Mr Datson. The question of stipend might be re-considered.
Mr Hyde moved and Mr McCartney seconded that the Vicar's wish in the matter be complied with. Carried.

[1] The Rev.John Harold Datson (1891-1962) began as a minister in the Congregational Church. He was accepted into the Anglican Church and was ordained a deacon in St Matthew's, Masterton, on 19 July 1925 and priested in 1926 in St Paul's Pro-Cathedral. He served in Masterton Parish from 1925-1927, when he was appointed Vicar of Raetihi. He served in several parishes, including a stint in the Diocese of Southwark and retired in 1951 from St Jude's, Lyall Bay.
